Hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair, hymenorrhaphy, and hymen surgery, is a clinically verified medical procedure to restore a woman’s broken hymen. It involves your doctor surgically repairing the broken ends or reconstructing a new hymen membrane by using a part of the vagina skin or synthetics.
Hymenoplasty as a procedure does not require any mandatory tests. However, it is important that you discuss your needs and expectations openly with your doctor. Based on the same, your gynecologist will take a physical exam to check the status of your hymen, that is if it is completely absent or has some broken remnants. Corresponding to the same, your gynecologist will prescribe you the best treatment.
To perform hymenoplasty, the vaginal site is first injected with local anesthesia. As the site numbs, the gynecologist uses very fine stitches to stitch together the broken remnant of the hymen. The stitches used are very minute and self dissolvable. The surgery typically takes less than 30 minutes and the stitches dissolve in around 15 days.
Both gynecologists and plastic surgeons can perform a hymenoplasty. However, a gynecologist with core experience in cosmetic-gynecology or obstetrics-gynecology is the most ideal choice.

What is a Hymen?
The hymen is a tissue found in the vagina which covers the vaginal opening. Its formation begins when the female baby is in the womb, generally when the carrier(Pregnant Mother) is in the fourth month of her pregnancy. A hymen may tear or break apart. But the damage caused need not be permanent. There are certain ways to repair the damage.
What Is Hymenoplasty?
Simply explained, Hymenoplasty (also known as Hymenorrhaphy, hymen repair, hymen rejuvenation, hymen restoration, revirginization, etc), is the cosmetic repair, restoration, or construction of a woman’s hymen. Restoration of the hymen is also referred to as revirginization. Hymen is a thin layer of tissue that partially encloses the vaginal opening. Until puberty hymen acts as barrier to vagina against infections.
Who Needs Hymenoplasty?
Since hymen repair has no medical benefit, it is not required for everyone. However, various societal norms dictate that women should be a virgin (that is, their hymen should remain intact) till marriage and that an intact hymen and bleeding during first intercourse is proof that a woman is a virgin and never had any premarital intercourse with anyone.
However scientific studies show that for most women the hymen gets ruptured during their teenage years due to reasons other than sexual intercourse.
Considering the above, Hymenoplasty is recommended for:
• Women who are under severe stress to prove their chastity after marriage
• Women for whom religious and societal norms dictate that they have an unruptured hymen till marriage
• Women who have suffered rape or sexual abuse, and want to have their hymen restored for psychological healing
• Women who, while beginning a new sexual relationship, may want to please their partner through revirginization
Various procedures of hymenoplasty
Depending upon the requirement and the condition of the hymen, there are several options for hymenoplasty:
1. Basic techniques: The local anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia to numb the hymen before the surgery. It is an outpatient surgery and takes around 30 – 40 minutes.
2. Hymen reconstruction: This surgical procedure includes the reconstruction of the hymen with the help of tissues removed from the lip of the vagina. After this procedure, you must abstain from sex for a minimum of three months.
3. All plant technique: This surgical procedure includes the insertion of a biomaterial into the vagina. This biomaterial is a tear-through material acting as the hymen. This surgery is performed when it is not possible to stitch the hymen back together.
Timing of Hymenoplasty
Since Hymen repair surgery is done solely for the purpose of appearing like a virgin (including bleeding during first Intercourse) on the wedding night, the timing of the surgery is very important and is decided based on the day of marriage or when the future planned coitus is supposed to take place. For patients who need the hymen to be intact on visual inspection, the surgery should be performed 3 months before the day of coitus. For patients who only want bleeding and visual inspection is not necessary, the surgery can be done atleast 4 weeks before the planned intercourse date.
